Transgender people often suffer greatly in our current healthcare system. Buddhist teachings present a way to examine the problems encountered and support beneficial change within the system. Brent Beavers, the son of a transgender parent, is a cisgender gay male and a Zen priest ordained in the lineage of Diane Eshin and Charlotte Joko Beck. He has a Masters in Buddhist Studies from the Graduate Theological Union and certificates in Chaplaincy and Soto Zen from the Institute of Buddhist Studies. His academic research in Buddhist perspectives on transgender othering in healthcare received honors, and has been presented in public forums, including the upcoming 2019 American Academy of Religion National Conference in November.
This workshop is co-sponsored by Out in Our Faith. OIOF is a group of welcoming religious congregations in Santa Cruz County.
