2009/06/08 Joan Fry's Proclamation
The headline in the Santa Cruz Sentinel, Wednesday, April 8,
1992, read "Homosexual Speakers anger high school parents." The article
goes on to state that "dozens of angry parents threatened to pull their children
out of San Lorenzo Valley schools" if Triangle Speakers presented at San Lorenzo
School. "Triangle Speakers met fierce protest in San Lorenzo Valley after
appearing in high school classes. Teachers administrators and speakers were
threatened, and engagements in other schools were canceled..."
The brave person behind this headline was Joan Fry. She is the brave teacher who held panels during the 1992 protest of Triangle
Speakers. She retired this year and we were able to bring her a Triangle Speakers panels one
last time! During the panel, we surprised her with a proclomation from Mark W. Stone, Sant Cruz county Fifth district Supervisor.
Congratulations to Joan Fry and her unflailing commitment to the issues facing LGBT youth. She has been a transforatvie figure at San Lorenzo Valley High. We honor her great work and the legacy she leaves behind.
2009/06/07 Santa Cruz Pride
Triangle Speakers has been marching in Santa Cruz Pride for many years now and this year was no different. We proudly marched down Pacific Avenue and recieved applause and waves from people who themselves are or have been speakers in the past, and the numerous individuals that have been in audiences listening to our presentaitons.
At the Triangle Speakers booth we recruited a new generation of speakers. People were eager to sign up and be a part of this wonderful program that has touched the lives of so many and made coming out of the closet that much easier for Sant Cruz County individuals
On Stage, we read out loud real quotes from audience members responding to us at panel presentations. We each shared how Triangle Speakers has touched our lives. Lex, a local spoken word artist, Charlie, a youth activist, and Joan, a Triangle Speaker panel host, each had a wonderful perspective to share.
Panel Count
1408 panels conducted since May 1991 reaching an estimated 50,000+ individuals
