The Safe Schools Project of Santa Cruz County
The Safe Schools Project is a county-wide effort to help make K-12 schools in Santa Cruz County a safer place for Queer & Queer-friendly youth. Co-sponsored by: The Santa Cruz County Task Force for LGBTIQ Youth (Queer Youth Task Force), affiliated with the Diversity Center; Triangle Speakers; STRANGE; PFLAG Santa Cruz County; Rainbow Society; Together for Youth; YWCA Watsonville; Rainbow Alliance; YouthServe; GLBT Alliance and other queer youth allies.

MISSION STATEMENT
The mission of The Safe Schools Project is to:
* Raise awareness of the harsh atmosphere queer youth face on school campuses in Santa Cruz County.
* Advocate for the enforcement of AB537.
* Be a catalyst for action in each school district to make schools safe for all youth.
OBJECTIVES
* Create partnerships with school personnel, parents, students, & community members.
* Inquire about and document current AB537 policies and procedures in each school in SC County.
* Identify an effective structure to implement AB537, to be put in place where needed.
* Provide resources to help schools put AB537 policies and procedures into place.
* Provide written summary of the project.
* Create a safe space for students to voice their experiences for the evening of the speak-out.
Some Project Activities:
* School Resource Officer (SRO) training
* National Day of Silence, Wednesday, April 13th for High School and Junior High School students.
* Website listing AB537, The California Student Safety and Violence Prevention Act of 2000, compliance officers at each K-12 school in Santa Cruz County.
