Who are we?

Abel Murillo
Latino Program Coordinator
(831) 425-5422 x6

Only 22, Abel has been organizing and mobilizing various communities for 6 years.  Driven by a need to create safe, supportive and welcoming spaces that he lacked growing up in a culturally strict environment, Abel works to provide safe and educational spaces for the community. While at UCSC, studying politics and community studies, he left behind an enduring legacy - a much stronger and healthier LGBT student organization as well as a student body more engaged to the needs of its LGBT peers.  He has been instrumental in recent developments in the LGBT Latino community in Santa Cruz County: Watsonville Pride, the LGBT Latino Retreat, the creation of the first LGBT Latino Task Force and the first linguistically accessible Transgender Day of Remembrance in Watsonville.

Lilia Sandoval
Latino Program Intern

Lilia Sandoval is a junior in the UCSC Community Studies Department currently working as an intern with the Triangle Speakers and Latino Programs. She identifies as a lesbian, and is interested in working with the LGBT Latino community as a career. She is particularly interested in doing field work with this program because she attended a high school where she felt that the LGBT community was forced into invisibility by homophobia, transphobia and prejudice. Lilia will begin an intensive 6 month 40 hour per week internship in July where she will support the Latino program in various duties.
